Thinking About Joining a Pilates Studio in Ann Arbor? Start Here.

At Sol Society Pilates, we offer beginner-friendly reformer and hot mat Pilates classes in Ann Arbor designed to help you build strength, improve posture, and feel confident in your movement. Below are answers to the most common questions we hear from new and returning clients.

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a low-impact workout focused on strength, core stability, flexibility, posture, and mobility through controlled movement and mindful breathwork.

The core principles of Pilates are breath, concentration, control, precision, flow, and core engagement.

At  Sol Society Pilates, we elevate traditional Pilates with reformer training, mat, strength work, and energetic flows designed to help you feel stronger, leaner, and more confident.

Is Pilates good for stress relief?

Absolutely. Pilates combines intentional movement, breath work, strength, and mindfulness to help reduce stress while improving energy and mental clarity.

At Sol Society Pilates, one of the most common questions we hear is the difference between Reformer Pilates and Hot Mat Pilates, and which is better for beginners.

Reformer Pilates uses a specialized machine with springs, straps, and a sliding carriage to create adjustable resistance. This allows for a highly controlled, supported form of training where you can both build strength and improve mobility through guided movement. The equipment helps provide feedback and structure throughout class, making it easy to modify exercises for different fitness levels.

Hot Mat Pilates is performed on a mat in a heated room using primarily bodyweight exercises. The added heat increases intensity and can help some people feel more flexible and challenged through sustained movement and endurance-based sequences. This style emphasizes core strength, stamina, and control without external equipment.

Both formats focus on improving strength, posture, mobility, and overall body awareness — just through different methods. Some clients prefer the support and structure of the reformer, while others enjoy the simplicity and intensity of mat-based classes in a heated environment. Many people in choose to incorporate both styles into their routine depending on their goals, energy level, and what they enjoy most. Ultimately, the best choice is the one that helps you stay consistent and feel good in your body! Sign up for our Sol Society Preview: 1 Hot Mat + 1 Reformer Intro Offer to try both.

Reformer Pilates vs Hot Mat Pilates: What’s the Difference?

Working out in a heated room can help increase flexibility, improve circulation, enhance muscle activation, and create a deeper sweat experience. Many clients also love the mental reset and energized feeling that comes from heated movement.

At  Sol Society Pilates, our heated mat classes are designed to support strength, mobility, endurance, and recovery in a fun, high-energy environment.

How hot is the Hot Mat room and what are the benefits of working out in a heated room?

We recommend drinking plenty of water throughout the day before class — not just right before you arrive. Adding electrolytes before or after your workout can also help support hydration and recovery.

After class, continue hydrating and refuel your body with water, electrolytes, and balanced nutrition to help restore energy and support recovery after sweating in the heat.

At  Sol Society Pilates, we always encourage clients to listen to their bodies and take breaks when needed during heated classes.

Can Pilates help with weight loss and toning?

Pilates can help improve muscle tone, posture, core strength, endurance, and overall body composition. Our signature Sol Society method combines Pilates with strength and cardio elements to create a powerful full-body workout.

Yes! Pilates is absolutely worth it even if you already have a consistent fitness routine.

In fact, many of our clients in Ann Arbor come to Pilates while already doing strength training, running, cycling, or group fitness classes. Rather than replacing those workouts, Pilates enhances them.

Pilates focuses on core strength, stability, posture, and controlled movement — all of which support better performance in other forms of exercise. It also helps address muscle imbalances that can develop from repetitive training patterns or high-impact workouts.

At Sol Society Pilates, we often see clients notice improvements in their lifting form, running efficiency, and overall body awareness after adding Pilates into their routine.

Think of Pilates as the foundation that helps everything else you do feel and perform better. Check out our welcome page to read about all the different classes we offer!

Is Pilates worth it if I already work out regularly?

Pilates can be extremely beneficial for improving posture and supporting people who experience mild back discomfort related to tightness, weakness, or prolonged sitting.

Many clients at our Ann Arbor studio come in with tension from desk jobs, long commutes, or everyday movement patterns that contribute to tight hips, shoulders, and lower back strain.

Pilates helps strengthen the deep core muscles that support the spine, while also improving flexibility and mobility in key areas like the hips and upper back. Over time, this combination can reduce stress on the lower back and help improve overall alignment and posture. That said, if you have a specific injury or medical condition, it’s always best to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new exercise program. Our instructors are always able to offer modifications and help you move in a way that feels safe and supportive! We’d love to see you at a Sol Searching: Pilates 101 class if you’re new and wanting to get started.

Is Pilates good for back pain and posture?

Is Sol Society good for women in perimenopause or menopause?

Yes. Our low-impact strength-based workouts are ideal for supporting bone density, mobility, muscle maintenance, stress reduction, and overall wellness during perimenopause and menopause.

How often should I take Pilates classes?

For best results, we recommend 3–5 classes per week depending on your goals. Consistency is key, and our class variety helps keep your body challenged and motivated.

Do you offer classes for men too?

Yes. Sol Society is for everyone looking to build strength, mobility, and confidence. Many men love our athletic approach to Pilates and strength training.

Do I need to be flexible to start Pilates?

Not at all. Pilates helps improve flexibility over time. You do not need experience, coordination, or flexibility to begin.

What should I wear to a Pilates class?

Wear comfortable workout clothing you can move in confidently. Most clients wear fitted athletic wear for ease of movement during reformer and mat classes.
